How Are Dried Apricots Made?

How Are They Dried?

Dried apricots can be prepared by drying the fruit either under the sun or in the oven. Among these methods, sun drying is considered the more traditional and straightforward option.

First, apricots should be carefully selected — avoiding any that are overripe, too soft, or too hard. After thorough washing, the fruits are left to partially dry in a shaded area. Once ready for sun drying, a large clean cloth should be laid out in a sunny location. Whole apricots are arranged on the cloth and left to dry under the sun for about 3 to 4 days.

As the apricots begin to firm up during this process, their pits should be gently pressed out. If this step is done too early, when the fruit is still soft, the flesh may be damaged.

Another common method for producing dried apricots is oven drying. Ripe apricots are washed, dried, and pitted before being placed on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. The oven is preheated to 70°C (160°F), and the apricots are dried for around 6 hours, turning them occasionally to ensure even dehydration.

How to Consume Dried Apricots

Dried apricots are a versatile food enjoyed at breakfast, as a snack, or combined with yogurt, oats, and walnuts. They can also be eaten on their own as a healthy treat. In dessert recipes, dried apricots are often used to add a natural aroma, color, and soft texture.

Recommended Amount of Dried Apricot Consumption

Rich in nutrients, dried apricots are a healthy food suitable for daily consumption. It’s generally recommended to eat about 5–6 pieces per day as part of a balanced diet. However, overconsumption should be avoided, and portion size should be monitored.
