What Is Menengic Coffee?

Menengic coffee is a traditional beverage made not from coffee beans but from the fruits of the menengic tree. Popular especially in Southeastern Anatolia, this drink is known for its creamy texture and distinctive roasted aroma. After harvesting, the fruits are roasted and ground into a paste-like consistency used for brewing.

The menengic tree belongs to the pistachio family and grows naturally in Mediterranean climates. Its small fruits are dried and roasted before being processed into coffee.

Although it is prepared in a cezve similarly to Turkish coffee, menengic coffee has a softer and creamier profile because it contains no coffee beans.

Today, menengic coffee has become increasingly popular beyond its traditional regions and attracts people looking for alternative coffee experiences.

Which Plant Is Menengic Coffee Made From?

Menengic coffee is made from the fruits of the Pistacia terebinthus tree, also known as the wild pistachio tree.

The fruits are harvested, dried, and roasted to develop their characteristic aroma. The roasting process enhances the nutty and rich flavour profile.

After roasting, the fruits are ground using traditional methods. This creates a thicker and slightly oily consistency compared to regular coffee powder.

The tree mainly grows in Southeastern Anatolia and Mediterranean regions, making the drink closely connected to regional coffee traditions.

How Is Menengic Coffee Different from Turkish Coffee?

The main difference lies in the raw ingredient. Turkish coffee is made from coffee beans, while menengic coffee is produced from roasted menengic fruits.

This creates a different flavour experience. Turkish coffee has a stronger roasted character, whereas menengic coffee is smoother and creamier.

The texture also differs significantly. Menengic coffee often develops a denser and richer consistency during brewing.

Both drinks share similar serving traditions, including small cups and water served on the side.

How Is Menengic Coffee Prepared and Served?

Menengic coffee is prepared by combining water and menengic paste in a cezve and heating the mixture slowly.

As it heats, a thick foam develops and is distributed evenly into cups.

Some recipes use milk instead of water, resulting in an even creamier texture.

Traditionally, menengic coffee is served with water and small sweets and is enjoyed slowly during conversation.
